Define 'good' before you search

When the search bar gets "I need a good lawyer," the searcher usually means four things at once: someone licensed and safe, someone who handles my kind of problem, someone who will tell me the truth, and someone whose bill won't ambush me. All four are checkable — none of them requires taking a website's word for it.

• LSO directory: confirm the licence, insurance status and any restrictions — one minute, public, free
• Focus check: does the lawyer's actual daily practice include your matter type?
• Consultation test: bring one hard, specific question and grade the concreteness of the answer
• Fee test: rates and flat quotes offered in writing, unprompted — transparency you don't have to extract is the habit you want

Signals that should end the conversation

• Guaranteed outcomes — prohibited for good reason, and always false
• Pressure to retain today, before you've seen anything in writing
• Vagueness about who will personally do the work
• No licence findable in the LSO directory
