Family law questions

What should I do first if I'm thinking about separating?+

Get advice before you act — before moving out, signing anything, or agreeing informally to arrangements. A confidential consultation maps your rights around parenting, support and property while all options are still open. The first 15 minutes are free.

How long does separation take to become divorce?+

Divorce is usually granted on the ground of one year of living separate and apart. The separation agreement resolving parenting, support and property can — and should — be completed during that year.

Will my family matter go to court?+

Most do not. Negotiated separation agreements resolve the large majority of files we handle. Court exists for genuine disputes and urgency — and if yours needs it, you will be prepared, not surprised.

How is property divided when a marriage ends?+

Ontario married spouses equalize the growth in their net worth during the marriage, with special rules for the matrimonial home. Common-law couples have different rights — property does not divide automatically, which surprises many people. Advice specific to your situation matters here.

What languages can we work in?+

English, Urdu, Punjabi and Hindi — with the lawyer, not through an interpreter service.
