HOW HAS THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AFFECTED THE LIVES OF FAMILIES?

HOW HAS THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AFFECTED THE LIVES OF FAMILIES? COVID-19 has truly altered the way in which we function daily. Coming out of full routine days into unpredictable nights mothers and fathers have been pushed to adopt new roles. For children, it has meant no longer interacting with their friends, schooling from home, restricted play areas and time spent with other outside family members dramatically decreased. Truly, boiling down to a very new, raw lifestyle that is unpredictable.

No school, New Lifestyle

With disrupted routines, this means parents have been pushed into a new maybe unwanted lifestyle. Parents now having to homeschool has truly triggered an uncharted sense of mixed emotions and anxiety. What does this mean for a Canadian family unit? Sabeeya Akram, a family lawyer states, “it means more time at home, with an increase in the potential to fight.” The added daily routines and parents still having to work from home or remote locations and the adopted new roles has shown an increase in domestic violence at home. “It is truly something unique, it is the effects of COVID-19 on the family unit, that gives the consultation a new spin from the usual reasons our clients want a divorce or separation,” says Ms Akram.

What can a family unit do?

The family lawyers at AYOUN LAW state that it is important that you step back and take the time you need to breath. Some people have set up personal spaces whether that be out doors, in your own bedroom or even in the garage. “One of my clients set up a tent in the garage with a table for alone teatime, what a clever idea!” mentions Ms. Akram.

Some other habits you may wish to adopt are:

  1. Reading alone
  2. Colouring
  3. Re-designing a space to make you feel better
  4. Giving yourself a make over
  5. Giving yourself that candle lit bath
  6. Taking the time to have that zoom meeting
  7. Now with phase 3 in the Peel Region allowing yourself to enjoy some patios and supporting local businesses

It’s all about distancing yourself from that daily grind so it does not creep up on the ‘cool you’. These are some daily tips you may wish to take into consideration when you feel that you might tip over the edge. HOW HAS THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AFFECTED THE LIVES OF FAMILIES?

Staying at home longer – Increase in abuse at home

The long-term effects on children from verbal abuse between parents can be negatively impactful. Whilst we only continue to speculate that verbal abuse inhouse has increased it is encouraged that you know when to seek the appropriate help when needed. It has been voiced by many leading child protection advocates that some children at home face real difficult issues. It can be noted that the true effects of staying at home, will only be known once the pandemic is over.

Prolonged periods of time at home are hard on anyone. If a child who has an abusive parent at home remains in the house, other adults in the home or the other child’s parent should seek to contact someone who can help resolve the matter. It should also be a highlight that a parent on the receiving end of the abuse should know how to stop and draw a line in terms of boundaries.

“The New Normal”

As the definition for “the new normal” evolves, so will our coping strategies. Canadian families have done remarkably well. We have adapted to new approaches, stayed home and continue to stay safe. Children, in particular, have shown adults it will be okay.
